The Rt. Rev. George E. Bates, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah, has canceled plans to attend the national General Convention of the Episcopal Church later this week in Detroit.
The clergyman, who was consecrated as Utah's bishop in October 1986, is undergoing treatment for a malignant growth on his throat."Bishop Bates has been in touch with several bishops who are members of the House of Bishops, who will keep in touch with him and with a delegation of 11 Utahns in Detroit," said spokesman Lee Shaw.
"Bishop Bates is maintaining his office schedule as much as possible and has kept up on various diocesan commitments, such as the ordination of a new priest last Sunday. And he will continue to maintain his office hours as much as possible. Otherwise, he will review materials at home," Shaw said.
"He has a very good attitude about the treatment regimen and has every assurance that he will be able to resume a full schedule later this year."
