Plans to expand Brighton ski resort have been put on hold until the end of the year.

The Salt Lake County Planning Commission voted Tuesday to delay a decision until the U.S. Forest Service studies effects on the environment and until the county completes its own plan for the future of the canyons. The county's plan probably will not be finished until November, officials said.Brighton officials want to replace the Mary Lift with a longer, quad lift, build two new lifts for beginning skiers and relocate the ski school. The project would increase the resort's capacity by 21 percent.

Residents in Big Cottonwood Canyon and environmentalists have opposed the project, contending it would increase traffic congestion in Big Cottonwood Canyon and could damage the area's environment.
