Carl Lewis overcame his customary slow start and won the 100-meter dash in a wind-aided 9.95 seconds in the Paris international track and field meet.Meanwhile, American Larry Myricks had the year's best long jump. Myricks had a legal wind of 1.7 mph and jumped 27 feet, 11 inches. Lewis had leaped 27-71/2 at the Lausanne track meet on Friday.
In the pole vault event, Poland's Miroslav Chmara cleared 19-41/4. Only world recordholder Segei Bubka of the Soviet Union and American recordholder Joe Dial have gone higher.
In the men's 400-meter intermediate hurdles Kevin Young of the United States won in a time of 48.32, beating world and Olympic silver medalist Danny Harris, second in 48.56.
World record-holder Evelyn Ashford won the women's 100 in 11.11. Said Aouita of Morocco had a fast 1,500-meter clocking, winning easily in 3:36.61 after a slow early pace.
