Aetna Life Insurance Co. has acquired Human Affairs International Inc. of Salt Lake City, a company that provides employee assistance programs. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

HAI provides employee assistance, managed mental health and substance abuse treatment programs to more than five million employees, retirees and dependents. It has 80 branch offices in 50 states and more than 350 affiliated mental health counselors along with operations in several foreign countries.

Jay C. Ripps, Aetna vice president, said the acquisition gives the company a competitive edge in offering a variety of management mental health services. Otto Jones, who founded HAI in 1973, will continue to direct it as an Aetna-owned company.
