Utah State softball's Brina Buttacavoli was named the Mountain West Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 25.
This is the first Mountain West weekly award of Buttacavoli's career and the first awarded to a Utah State player this season.
Playing as both catcher and designated player, Buttacavoli led Utah State to a 4-1 record last weekend in a tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as the Aggies defeated Omaha (5-3) and swept the host Islanders (8-5, 15-0 ), while splitting two games against Texas Southern (W 7-0, L 9-8). Against Omaha, she was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run and adding four defensive putouts. In the win over Texas Southern, Buttacavoli went 1-for-4, scoring two runs and adding seven putouts. She was 2-of-4 at the plate in the loss to Texas Southern, scoring one run and batting in one other. She ended the day batting 2-for-3 in the first game against TA&M-CC, scoring one run and adding a career-high 10 putouts behind the plate, along with one assist. Buttacavoli finished the tournament going 2-for-4 against the Islanders with one home run, adding four RBIs and five putouts. On the weekend, Buttacavoli batted .526 (10-of-19), scoring six runs and batting in five. She hit one home run and tallied 26 putouts and one assist.
Utah State (7-7) has this weekend off. The team returns to non-conference action next week with a single game at Pacific on Wednesday, March 7. Utah State will then participate in the Aggie Invitational, hosted by UC Davis. There, the Aggies will play two games against UC Davis, as well as two against Northern Colorado and one against Valparaiso.
