Utah State’s Mikaela Meyer was tabbed the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Vault Specialist of the Week, it was announced Sunday by the league office.
It is the first time this year and first time in her career that the freshman from Myersville, Maryland, has earned MRGC weekly accolades. Meyer is the second Utah State gymnast to be honored by the conference this season as fellow freshman Autumn DeHarde has nabbed a pair of Specialist of the Week awards, once on floor and once on beam.
Overall, this is the Aggies’ 14th MRGC weekly award in their fourth season in the league.
Meyer matched her career high on vault with a 9.850 to place fourth at the Elevate The Stage meet last Friday at the SeaGate Convention Centre in Toledo, Ohio. As a team, the Aggies had a 48.750 on vault and placed third in the quad meet with a season-high road score of 195.325.
The 5-foot-3 Meyer currently ranks tied for 69th nationally and fourth in the MRGC with a 9.820 Regional Qualifying Score on vault.
Meyer was one of seven gymnasts honored by the MRGC this week.
Boise State’s Shani Remme captured her sixth Gymnast of the Week award after leading the MRGC with a 39.450 in the all-around in a dual meet at BYU. Remme won the all-around title during the meet and also finished first on beam, scoring a 9.925 to earn Beam Specialist of the Week honors for the fourth time this season.
BYU sophomore Angel Zhong helped the Cougars to a 196.225-196.175 victory over the Broncos by scoring a 9.850 on vault en route to an individual title on the event and Vault Specialist of the Week honors. Southern Utah twins Megan and Madison McBride matched the mark on vault to share Vault Specialist of the Week honors, scoring 9.850s in the Thunderbirds’ 195.850-195.775 victory over Iowa.
BYU sophomore Shannon Hortman-Evans captured the second of three individual titles for the Cougars in the dual meet against Boise State, scoring a 9.900 on bars for her third Bars Specialist of the Week award.
BYU senior Kyleigh Greenlief was the final individual victor in the meet, scoring a 9.950 on floor en route to her first Floor Specialist of the Week honor this season.
Utah State (6-6, 1-2 MRGC) returns to the friendly confines of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum to host in-state and MRGC-rival BYU on Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m.
