Our motto, kind of, is ‘gas pedal’ — like just push the gas and never stop until it’s over. We just want to push ahead and get a comfortable lead, but keep it and not give it up. —Cameron Mooney
TAYLORSVILLE — Skyline made certain to counteract Springville's vicious guard pressure effectively in its 48-33 win during the quarterfinal round of the 5A state tournament on Wednesday.
Helping considerably in that regard was the play of forward Cameron Mooney. Mooney scored a game-high 21 points and got the Eagles off early and often, scoring her team's first seven points en route to an early 14-10 lead after one quarter.
From there the Eagles worked to extend the lead to 24-15 at the half and to 35-23 after three quarters to win by a healthy margin.
“Our motto, kind of, is ‘gas pedal’ — like just push the gas and never stop until it’s over,” Mooney said. “We just want to push ahead and get a comfortable lead, but keep it and not give it up.”
Key to that gas pedal was Mooney herself, whom Skyline coach Lynette Schroeder knew could provide a big advantage for her team.
“We knew we had a size advantage with her, so that was our focal point in trying to get her the ball,” Schroeder said. “We definitely needed to keep Mooney involved and just whenever we saw her (open) that we got her the ball.”
Despite the wide margin of victory, Schroeder wasn't exactly passing out balloons or throwing confetti at the end, keeping her comments short and hesitant to pass out any compliments to her defending state champion team.
When asked to comment on whether her team did a good job of keeping the gas pedal down, she smiled, and stated, “No, but I’m hard to please,” Schroeder said.
What Schroeder was pleased with was her team's overall composure in dealing with Springville's speed and pressure defense.
“I think it’s experience, but I also think it’s their demeanor and the things we practice,” Schroeder said. “We talk about being poised a lot, and so I’m happy with how they showed that tonight.”
With the win Skyline advances to take on Timpview in the semifinal round on Friday.
