The Rapid City Rush scored a third-period power-play goal and spent the final 4:52 of the game on the power play as they held on to defeat the Utah Grizzlies, 2-1, on Saturday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Utah goaltender Joel Rumpel stopped 24-of-26 in his Utah debut, not allowing a five-on-five goal.
The Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead 4:37 into the first period as Austin Ortega (11) redirected home a Sam Windle blast with Alex Dostie drawing an assist.
Rapid City tied the game 7:52 later and 70 seconds into its first power play, and Rapid City broke a 1-1 tie that lasted for 32:35 five minutes into the third period to take a 2-1 lead.
Utah was unable to score on its three power plays as the Grizzlies drew three of the first four and Rapid City scored on its first two.
The Rush spent the final 4:52 of the contest on the power play after Travis Howe was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for head-butting.
The Grizzlies continue their seven-game road trip Friday and Saturday in Dallas against the Allen Americans. Faceoff each night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Grizzlies return home for a Maverik Monday Matinee on Monday, Feb. 19, against Idaho at 1:30 p.m.
