BOUNTIFUL — The Cottonwood girls swim team’s performance over the weekend can be summed up in two words: dominant and impressive. The Colts captured the 5A title with 320 points — second place belonged to Skyline at 200 points and Timpview finished third with 167.

“This is a special group,” said Cottonwood coach Ron Lockwood. “We were in a good place to bring back our team from state last year, and they just put together a special season.”

Senior Rhyan White, who is headed to the University of Alabama, took home four titles in the championship. She won the first with her teammates (200 medley relay) Friday, then snagged two individual titles Saturday in the 100 fly and the 100 back. She won the 100 fly by more than three seconds and the back by more than four seconds. She capped her night by anchoring the winning 400 medley relay group.

White credited her breathing strategy around the turns and the ability to hyperextend her knees for being differences makers in a competitive 100 fly field that included two other past state champions.

“Rhyan is fun to coach, and it’s been really great to be a part of her career and all that she has accomplished,” said Lockwood.

Other highlights on the girls’ side included Viewmont junior Mariah Maile. Maile snagged three titles with the 200 free coming Friday, and then 100 free and 200 free relay Saturday. She shared the relay title with her sister MJ Maile.

“I love racing my sister, but racing with her is even more fun,” said Mariah Maile.

“This was a special win,” said MJ Maile. “We are all seniors on this relay except Mariah, so to win with my friends and Mariah is really great.”

While the team title was never in question on the girls' side, the race for the boys' title was a different story with Brighton and Cottonwood battling down to the final events. In the end, the Bengals earned the championship with 287 points to Cottonwood’s 253.5 and Skyline’s 207.

“We knew it was going to be a dogfight — it has been all season between us, Cottonwood and Skyline,” said Brighton coach Todd Etherington. “Give credit to my boys—they never gave up, the other boys didn’t either, but they just found a way to get out there and swim like they’ve been training.”

Brighton’s Jack Binder continued his strong showing after helping his team to the 200 medley relay title Friday. On Saturday, the senior topped the 100 fly field and anchored the winning 200 yard free relay.

West’s Mitchell Simmons defended his 500 free title. It was the second title of the championships for the senior who grabbed the 200 on the first day.

“I put all of my focus on my 200, which is my best event, and I think that’s what helped me really push my 500,” said Simmons.

Christian Simon and Blayze Kimble led Cottonwood. Kimble won the 200 IM the first day and added the 100 breaststroke title Saturday. Kimble and Simon were both part of the Colts’ 400 yard freestyle relay championship with Simon outpacing Springville’s effort on the final turn. Simon won the 50 free on opening day, and added the 100 free the second day.

“There is no disappointment with our finish,” said Lockwood. “That was some incredible racing by all of the teams, and Todd’s a great coach so we knew it was going to be tough to get them.”

The highlight of the day came from Springville’s Cameron Green, who broke the 5A record in the 100 back at 49.95, which was just shy of the state record at 49.87. Green is only a sophomore.
