OREM — The showdown between defending state champs Juab and Delta is shaping up to be an exciting one in the newly aligned 3A classification.

Defending 3A champ Juab and defending 2A champ Delta both had strong performances during the opening day of the 3A state tournament at UVU on Friday night.

Juab leads with 132.5 points, followed by Delta in second with 111.5 points and Morgan in third with 83.

Juab advanced 11 wrestlers into Saturday’s semifinals, which begin at 11 a.m. Delta advanced nine wrestlers to the semis. The championship matches start at 4:45 p.m.

Leading the way for Juab was defending state champ Gentry Warner, who advanced to the 132-pound semifinals with a pair of pins in the first two rounds.

Other Juab wrestlers to advance to the semis were Conner Ingram (113), Kalob Nybo (120), Cade Bowring (138), Tyler Lynn (145), Joey Aagard (160), Blake Mangelson (170), Charles Watts (182), Talon Mangelson (195), Jackson Schugk (220) and Jaxson Kendall (285).

It wasn’t a perfect opening day though for Juab as 152-pound favorite Wyatt Harmon was upset by Emery’s Agustus Dalton with an 11-8 quarterfinal win.

Despite all the Juab and Delta wrestlers who advanced to the semifinals, surprisingly they’ll only square off in 3A semis.

Delta is a slight favorite in all three, which could help it close the gap on Juab’s lead.

The three semifinals that could potentially swing momentum are at 145, 170 and 285 pounds.

Delta’s Dyllin Broughton faces Lynn at 145 pounds, Delta’s Tanner Shields faces Blake Mangelson and 170 pounds and then Delta’s Bradden Davis faces Kendall at 285 pounds.

Delta’s other semifinalists are Jayden Petersen (113), Tyler Dalton (120), Cael Rowley (126), Jake Jackson (152), Yair Moran (182), Brandon Atkinson (195).

Morgan’s Chase Trussell, one of the top wrestlers nationally at 220 pounds, eased into the semifinals with a bye in the first round and then a pin in the quarterfinals.
