Emery's swimming team celebrates its state championship at the Wasatch Aquatic Center on Thursday.
We are proud of the hard work that all the boys put in this season. This win came from all levels of swimmers. The depth of this team is what pulled us through. —Emery coach Andrea Johansen

HEBER CITY — Christening Wasatch Aquatic Center’s brand new competition pool on Thursday at the 3A state championships, Emery’s boys swimming team capped a great season by winning its second straight state title.

Beating its closest competitor by 55 points, Emery and North Summit were neck and neck until the final races. Clinching the men’s 400 freestyle relay by 4.60 seconds with a time of 3:32.32 solidified their tenuous lead.

“Out of all the teams we’ve ever had, this team has the most grit. We didn’t have any great, stand out, super stars. but we had a lot of youth that really stepped up from behind and just pulled it out,” said Emery coach Andrea Johannson.

Helping to add to the men’s top score were first place finishes in the 50 freestyle by Junior Keldan Guymon with a time of 22:67, the 100 freestyle by Guymon with a time of 50:99 and the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.32.

“They left it all in the water. I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Johannson.

On the girls side, Rowland Hall captured its first state title in school history tallying 279 points, with Carbon close behind with 257 points.

“On the first day of swim practice this year, I was expecting a total of 12 swimmers to show up,” said Rowland Hall coach Amelia Wolfgram. “We actually had 24, so that gave us something to build from.”

Rowland Hall took top honors in one individual event with Ella Vitek winning the 50 Freestyle with a time of 25.76. It also took first place in multiple team events, including the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:46.86 and the 400 freestyle relay in 3:54.79.

“They are absolutely phenomenal. Doing this well was completely unexpected. The kids put so much effort into this team. At the beginning of the season, we talked about how effort is observable. I just wanted them to all do their best. I didn’t really care what the score was. In the end. it will pay off and the score will take care of itself,” said Wolfgram.

The girls top all-around athlete award went to Grantsville freshman Hadlee Begay who took first place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.59 and the 500 freestyle finishing at 5:18.65.

Maeser Prep’s Tony Puertas won the boys top All-Around Athlete wards with first-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (49.91) and the 200 IM (1:54.58).

Puertas’ 49.91 time in the 100 fly is the seventh-best state meet performance in state history.

Grand’s Braxten Pierce prevailed in two events as well, winning the 200 and 500 freestyles.

There were three individual double winners during the 3A girls meet: Millard’s Drew Roper (100 free, 100 back), Grantsville’s Savannah Thomas (200 IM, 100 breast) and Grantsville’s Hadlee Begay (100 fly, 500 free).
