It is the state tournament. You have to be ready for anything. —Viewmont wrestler Taylor Money
OREM — Toward the end of his quarterfinals bout with Olympus’ Emerson Conlon, Wednesday night at UVU’s UCCU Center, William Taylor Money (195) got tired.
The Viewmont Vikings star was so tired in fact that, after having grappled with Conlon for nearly three complete rounds, he was almost thrown.
“Towards the end I got pretty tired,” said Money. “I almost gave up a throw there for a minute.”
Somehow, he managed to avoid said miscue and held on for a 9-2 decision, a decision that advanced him to Thursday’s 5A semifinals.
“It is the state tournament,” said Money. “You have to be ready for anything.”
As a collective, the Vikings proved themselves just about ready for anything and everything the 5A classification could throw at them day one of the state tournament.
Viewmont advanced an impressive 14 wrestlers to the semifinals, racking up a team score of 164.0 points in the process.
That score was 51.5 points greater than that of second place and three-time defending champion Wasatch (112.5), all but guaranteeing Viewmont the state title.
“(The state title) is right there,” said Money. “It is one of those things where the whole season you think ‘I have to get ready for state. I have to train hard.’ We’ve trained hard and it is right there and we just have to do what we need to do.”
It was, simply put, a dominant showing by the Vikings.
Parker Frasure (106) got the day started right for Viewmont, with a pin of Skyridge’s Lance Roberts. From there, Frasure, Karson Rees (120), Jeremy Evans (132), Jameson Burnett and Shion Abe (138), Lorince Essig (145), Joshua Kim and Jackson Coyle (160), Collin Smith (170), Cameron Brown and Tyson Zesiger (182), Duncan Purpura and Money (195) and Andrew Bargeron (285) all found a way to advance to the semis.
“It’s awesome,” said Money. “It is almost just as good to watch someone you care about win than to win yourself. We rise and fall as a team.”
As for the defending champs, the Wasps weren’t too shabby, advancing seven wrestlers of their own.
Chief among those, per the usual, was Zak Kohler (138).
Kohler made short work of both of his opponents, pinning both Joshua Stuart (Box Elder) and Garrick Kilpack (Alta).
“He loves wrestling,” Wasatch head coach Wade Discher said of Kohler. “He has scored at least 300 takedowns this year in 40-plus matches and has scored almost 700 match points. (Zak) wants to wrestle as much as he can. He wants to get as much out of (a match) before he has to pin ‘em.”
DJ Cohen (195) and Stockton O’Brien (132) were equally impressive in their own right, but a lack of depth and a late unsportsmanlike penalty prevented the Wasps from keeping pace with the leaders.
Coming in the third place on the day was the Box Elder Bees with a score of 95.0. No Bee was more impressive than Brock Hardy (145), as expected. The three-time state champ pinned both his first round and quarterfinals opponents with relative ease.
Rounding out the top five were the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles, led by star Brandyn Van Tassell (182), and the Skyridge Falcons (76.5).
