Utah Valley University sophomore 174-pounder Kimball Bastian was named the Big 12 Conference Co-Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4. The honor is Bastian's second of his career and the second weekly honor of the season for the Wolverines.
Bastian (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) earned Big 12 Co-Wrestler of the Week honors after upsetting No. 10 Yoanse Mejias, 2-1, en route to leading UVU to its first win in program history over the Oklahoma Sooners. After being granted a penalty point in the first and an escape in the second, Bastian held a 2-1 lead over the Sooner 2017 NCAA qualifier with time winding down in the final period. Mejias then looked to have scored the go-ahead takedown with just mere seconds remaining, but after review, the official erased the takedown off the board and Bastian held on for the big upset that proved to be the difference in the dual.
Bastian, who re-entered the national rankings with the win, is now ranked 17th by InterMat. The Wolverine sophomore improved to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in duals with the victory.
Iowa State redshirt freshman Sam Colbray (197 pounds) also earned co-wrestler of the week honors after picking up two dual victories this past weekend. He kicked off the weekend with a 5-3 decision in sudden victory over Cordell Eaton and then closed the weekend with a win by fall over No. 11 Nate Rotert, pinning the Jackrabbit in 5:22.
Bastian and the 25th-ranked Wolverines hit the road this weekend to face conference foes Wyoming and Air Force. UVU first takes on No. 17 Wyoming on Friday, Feb. 9, in Laramie, before closing the trip at Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 10.
