Dixie State’s women’s golf team enjoyed a solid start to its 2018 spring season as the Trailblazers stand in third place overall after the opening 18 holes of play at the Point Loma-hosted Reach 2018 Invitational played Monday at the par-72, 6,040-yard Riverwalk Golf Course.
DSU posted a combined 20-over 308 score on day one, 10 strokes off the pace set by opening-round leader Cal State San Marcos (298, +10), while fellow Pacific West Conference member California Baptist is one shot clear of Dixie State in second at plus-19 308. The Trailblazers do own a 10-shot lead on fourth-place Sonoma State (318, +30) and are 19 strokes ahead of fifth-place Victoria (327, +39).
Junior Katie Ford is the lone player in the 15-team, 80-player field in red numbers as she fired an opening round 1-under 71 to lead by two strokes over CSU San Marcos’ Jaime Jacob (73, +1). Ford co-led the field with four birdies and carded 11 pars on her opening loop.
In all, three Trailblazers are listed in the top 15 on the leaderboard, including freshman Kaitlynn Deeble, who penciled in three birdies on her way to a 6-over 78 to stand tied for 10th overall, while senior Cobair Collinsworth recorded two birdies and 11 pars to finish day one in a six-way tie for 15th at plus-7 79. Freshman Cailyn Cardall is tied for 21st at 8-over 80, and junior Amalia Negrette wrapped up day one tied for 49th at plus-16 88.
“I am really pleased with the way the ladies played today,” DSU head coach Lindsey Stucki said. “We putted really well on some tough greens that featured really difficult pin placements. We’re happy to be sitting in third place, but we know we left a few shots out there.
“Katie [Ford] played a really solid round today with very few mistakes. It will be exciting to see her battle for the individual win tomorrow.”
Dixie State looks to make a move up the leaderboard in Tuesday’s final round, which begins at 8 a.m. PT.
