Utah State women's basketball (4-16, 2-7 MW) returns to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum this weekend as it hosts Fresno State (10-9, 5-3 MW) on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m.
Fresno State makes the trip to Logan with a 10-9 overall record while going 5-3 in Mountain West play. The Bulldogs opened the week with a 74-72 last-second win at UNLV. Saturday will mark the first repeat opponent for the Aggies this Mountain West season.
Fresno State returned six letterwinners, including two starters, to its bench this season. A year ago, the Bulldogs posted an 18-15 overall record, including an 8-10 Mountain West ledger. Junior guard Candice White leads the team and the Mountain West in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game. She is also the top rebounder for the Bulldogs, averaging 6.6 boards per game. As a team, Fresno State is averaging 65.7 points per game, while allowing 68.6 points from its opponents. Overall, the Bulldogs are shooting 39.5 percent (443-of-1121) from the floor, 34.9 percent (139-of-398) from the 3-point line and 73.9 percent (224-of-303) from the free-throw line. Jaime White is in her fourth season as the head coach at Fresno State, where she has an overall record of 82-46.
With shared time in the WAC and the Mountain West, Utah State and Fresno State have met 24 times since 2006. The Bulldogs have a dominant lead in the series, leading 21-3. Last season, the teams played just once, where the Aggies picked up their first win in Fresno and snapped a 16-game series winning streak for Fresno State. The Bulldogs narrowly defeated the Aggies, 57-56, in the teams’ first meeting this season.
Sophomore guard Olivia West is the leading scorer for the Aggies, averaging 12.7 points per game, while sophomore guard/forward Shannon Dufficy is the top rebounder, averaging 8.1 boards per game. As a team, Utah State is shooting 39.6 percent (449-of-1134) from the field, 27.9 percent (94-of-347) from the 3-point line and 67.6 percent (184-of-272) from the free-throw line.
