OGDEN, Utah — With a Jan. 8 groundbreaking ceremony, the Church has commenced construction on a new FamilySearch Center on the corner of Grant Avenue and 22nd Street, near the Ogden Utah Temple in the heart of this northern Utah City.
Like similar facilities that have been constructed recently in other locales such as Salt Lake City, Layton and St. George, Utah, the new facility, expected to be completed in the spring of 2019, will offer fun and innovative family history activities free of charge to patrons of all ages.
Elder Steven Merrill Petersen, Area Seventy, presided at the groundbreaking and noted that Ogden was once called Junction City, a reference to its being a railroad town. He said the new FamilySearch Center “will serve as a junction between the past, present and future. The center will serve everyone in the future to help them tie their past to the present. As we look back, we move forward.”
When complete, the 12,000-square-foot facility will offer free, world-class research services, engaging activities for all ages designed to create personalized family discoveries, free access to online genealogical websites and personal assistance.
Many of the interactives at this and its sister facilities elsewhere will draw upon a patron’s own family history as recorded in the FamilySearch Family Tree database to create custom learning experiences.
“We’ve learned that if individuals and families have fun, personalized, quick successes and experiences with their family’s history, they will continue to be more involved at different levels throughout their lives,” said Diane Loosle, vice president of FamilySearch’s Help Division and the director of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. “It also deepens appreciation for family connections across multiple generations.”
The Ogden FamilySearch Center, currently located at 539 24th Street, originally opened in 1966 and will remain open during construction of the new facility. It has been one of the largest and busiest facilities in the FamilySearch network of over 5,000 family history centers worldwide.
