I think Oliver Meservy's letter of Jan. 2 in which he criticizes Sen. Hatch for the tax bill is incorrect ("The new tax plan only hurts Utah's middle class"). In calculating income tax for his hypothetical middle-class families, Meservy figures their tax burden will increase. However, he appears to leave out the child tax credits for the four children — at least I did not see him reference them. The families would actually see a substantial tax reduction when the credits from Sens. Lee and Rubio's amendment go into the mix.
In my case, taxes will be reduced much more than enough to overcome the annual $750 increase in personal tax liability I incurred when President Obama's health care bill reduced by two-thirds the amount of pretax dollars I could contribute to my medical flex plan for my large family.
