PROVO — While the varsity team was finishing fourth at the Richardson Memorial, Payson's junior varsity team won the Bulldog Brawl Saturday, besting several varsity teams in the process.
Payson went 5-0 to win the tournament as it had six wrestlers go undefeated in the competition.
Deagan Palmer (113 pounds), Ethan Penrod (126), Shawn Marvin (132/138), Jordan Roper (152), Louis Williams (182) and Dakota Boss (285) all won their bouts for the Lions.
Payson bested Provo 57-19 right off the bat to set the tone and then defeated West, Salem Hills, Timpview and Springville. Salem Hills also competed with its JV team in the event, but unlike the Lions, didn't win a dual.
Host Provo placed second. After losing to the Lions to start the day, the Bulldogs got rolling to win their last four matches. One of the big victories for Provo came in the final dual as it avenged an earlier season loss to Timpview, winning 41-30.
Going unscathed for the Bulldogs were Gabe Wolf (106), Alex Gordon (132) and Ben Badonie (170).
West placed third, going 3-2 on the day. Duncan Arnold (120), Octavio Gutierrez (138) and Jack Lang (145) won all their matches to pace the Panther attack.
Other unblemished wrestlers included Timpview's Tino Leilua (195) and Springville's Simote Iloa (220).
Team results: 1. Payson (5-0) 2. Provo (4-1) 3. West (3-2) 4. Springville (2-3) 5. Timpview (1-4) 6. Salem Hills (0-5)
