Letter to the Editor

I was confused when I read Mr. Molen's letter blaming Ronald Reagan for the gun violence going on these days ("Government is not the enemy," Nov. 21). Our Founding Fathers had lived with an oppressive government and knew what they were doing when they prohibited interference with gun ownership. Many in the world live with governments that can jail you or kill you if you object to what they are doing. Hitler killed millions of Jewish people and others just because of their ancestry. Communist Russia killed millions of people in purging people they disagreed with.

If we do not defend our rights, we will certainly lose them. We have had guns for the entire history of this country. The thing that is different is that our cultural values have changed. Today, we have violent video games, violent TV and movies and some people have been influenced to the point where they cannot tell the difference between fantasy and reality.

While the events that have occurred in recent years are wrong and sad, they don't come near to the number of people killed by automobiles or by wars raging throughout the world. Be thankful for what you have. Giving it up will be a disaster.
