This illustration made available by the European Southern Observatory on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017 shows the planet Ross 128 b, which orbits a red dwarf star, 11 light-years from Earth. The exoplanet is the second-closest to be detected yet outside our solar system with surface temperatures potentially similar to ours.

A lighthearted look at news of the day.

Republicans are wondering whether they can replace Roy Moore in the Alabama Senate race with Jeff Sessions. Of course, we wouldn't be holding a special election in Alabama in the first place if Sessions hadn't vacated his Senate seat to become U.S. attorney general. You may be wondering if such a move would be legal. I have an idea. Let's ask for an opinion from the attorney general.

---

Jeff Sessions testified before Congress last week, answering questions about possible Russian involvement with the Trump campaign. He said, "I don't recall" so many times even amnesia patients said it wasn't possible.

---

Scientists say they have discovered a planet only 11 light years away that could be capable of sustaining life. It's hard to know exactly what living conditions would be like there, but people who have survived winter inversions along the Wasatch Front are wondering, how tough could it be?

---

If we're ever going to move to this planet, someone needs to think up a new name. At the moment, scientists are calling it Ross 128 b. No one wants to live in a place where interplanetary visitors come and say, "Greetings, Ross 128 b-ling."

---

The other problem with Ross 128 b is that it rotates around its host star, conveniently called Ross 128, once every nine days. That would certainly make the birthday cake industry the planet's most profitable enterprise.

---

Imagine having a birthday every nine days. Even worse, imagine growing up and being told you can't get a driver's license until you're 640.

---

Actually, Ross 128 is a red dwarf star, a type CNN described as the "coolest" of stars in the universe. I don't know about that. I think our sun is pretty cool. Otherwise, people wouldn't make those drawings of it wearing dark sunglasses.
