Dixie State head women’s swimming coach Benjamin Rae announced the signing of three prep swimmers who will compete for the Trailblazers next season. DSU received National Letters of Intent from McKenzie Chesler from Highland, Utah; Alaina Otterstrom from Salem, Oregon; and Kelsea Wright from American Canyon, California.
Chesler (5-foot-5; Lone Peak HS) specializes in the 100 freestyle, butterfly and back events and the 200 IM. She finished in the top five in the Utah 5A ranks in the 200 free, 200 IM and 100 fly, and she was part of the Knights’ 400 free relay state championship winning team as a freshman.
“Kenzie was an athlete that we have been focused on for quite some time,” Rae said. “She will be a great fit with the team and is a very versatile athlete. I believe that she is an athlete that can help take our program to another level.”
Otterstrom (5-5; West Salem HS) will add depth to the 100 (PR – 59.27) and 200 fly (PR – 2:10.37), as well as the 400 IM (PR – 4:47.42) events. She was the 2017 district champion in the 100 fly, and she earned Oregon Top-5 and all-Mid-Valley award recognition.
“Alaina will be a great addition to our program and fill immediate needs in the butterfly events,” Rae said. “She comes from a strong program and understands how to be successful at the collegiate level.”
Wright (5-5; New Technology HS) specializes in the 200 (PR – 1:53) and 500 (PR – 5:04), 200 back (PR – 2:08) and 200 fly (PR – 2:10) events. She is a three-time NTHS team MVP and has served as her club’s team captain for four seasons.
“We are so excited to have Kelsea join our program. She will be an instant contributor for our team both in dual meets and in progressing toward placing athletes at the NCAA championship meet,” said Rae. “As a new program, we are looking for athletes that can define the future of our program, and we believe that is the kind of athlete that Kelsea can be for our team.”
