Count the Daily Beast's Matt Lewis among those who didn't like Mitt Romney but have now experienced "a mighty change of heart," to borrow a phrase from the Book of Mormon.
In 2015, Lewis wrote of Romney's rumored third attempt at the presidency, “Aside from a handful of rich political donors, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks this is a good idea.” But now, the writer says "Mitt Romney was a decent, honorable person. It turns out, that’s about all you can ask for these days."33 comments on this story
"We wanted the bad boy, but Romney was the 'nice' boy you didn’t want to marry because he wasn’t exciting or flamboyant. He was trying too hard. He didn’t make our palms sweat. And why should we settle? We’re young, after all," Lewis wrote in an article published Friday. "So we kicked him to the curb, only to end up in an abusive relationship with Donald Trump. And now, we would give anything for one more night on the couch watching Turner Classic Movies and sipping decaffeinated tea with this sweet, decent man."
Earlier this year, Bill Maher, who had previously donated $1 million in an effort to keep Romney from becoming president, said he would give $1 million and "become a Mormon" for Mitt Romney to now be president.
