Dixie State men’s soccer program placed four players on the 2017 Pacific West Conference postseason awards list, which was announced on Wednesday.
For the second-straight year, sophomore forward Moises Medina and Bryan Baugh were voted first-team all-PacWest, while sophomore netminder Zach Nielson was tabbed as the league’s co-Goalkeeper of the Year and senior forward Ather Dawood collected third-team all-conference honors.
Medina (Mesquite, Nevada/Virgin Valley HS) enjoyed a record-breaking season in 2017 as he set DSU single-season records for goals scored (12), assists (eight) and points (32). Four of his 12 goals on the year were game-winning scores, while he became just the second player in program history to record two hat tricks in one season, doing so vs. Colorado-Colorado Springs and at home against Point Loma.
Medina finished the 2017 campaign on a tear as he scored at least one goal in five of his final seven matches of the year, and he tallied at least one point in 11 of 17 matches played overall. Medina’s eight assists this season also pulled him into a tie atop DSU’s career assists list with Baugh (14).
Baugh (Henderson, Nevada/Green Valley HS), who was voted 2017 PacWest Preseason Defender of the Year after earning the postseason award last season, anchored a DSU defense that recorded five shutout wins and surrendered just 24 goals in 17 matches overall (1.38 GAA). He also tallied two goals on the offensive side, including his fourth-career goal in the season finale win over Azusa Pacific last Saturday, and assisted on another score earlier this season.
Nielson (West Point, Utah/Northridge HS), who also earned first-team all-PacWest honors, started in 10 of 15 matches played in goal, with four of his 10 victories on the season coming via shutout, including three PacWest shutout results. He finished with a 1.42 GAA and 52 saves overall, while his 10 wins in goal pulled him into a tie atop DSU’s single-season wins list.
Dawood (Tucson, Arizona/Palo Verde HS/Yavapai CC) started in 15 games this season and finished the year with three goals and five assists. He recorded at least one point in seven of 15 appearances overall and recorded game-winning goals in results over Biola and at Dominican.
PacWest champion California Baptist picked up three postseason awards, including Player of the Year (Aidan Apodaca), Defender of the Year (Abe Placito) and Coach of the Year (Coe Michaelson). Additionally, Point Loma’s Wiktor Lasota shared the league’s goalkeeper award with Nielson, while Fresno Pacific’s Fellipe Souza was named the conference’s Newcomer of the Year and Holy Names’ Carlos Vazquez-Perez was tabbed as Freshman of the Year.
