The Utah Grizzlies defeated the Allen Americans, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Allen Event Center.
Rookie defenseman Cliff Watson (three) scored the game-winning goal with 7:31 left in regulation as Kyle Thomas picked up a turnover and the Utah rookie defenseman went to the net.
“More offense from our defensemen,” said head coach and General Manager Tim Branham. “It was big to come out on the road and get this first one.”
Utah outshot Allen, 44-24, in the game, and goaltender Kevin Carr won his third-straight game by stopping 23-of-24 shots.
“All around I thought Carr made things look easy,” said Branham. “We were excited, played with energy (and) played with pace.”
The win is Utah’s fourth in its last five games.
“I thought we controlled the play really well in this game,” said Branham. “Five on five, we controlled the pace (and) controlled the play. We played a really solid game, and we’re happy to the win.”
The 1-1 tie stayed for 30 minutes and 15 seconds after Allen tied the contest 2:14 into the second period as Tanner Eberle found a rebound following a save on a breakaway by Carr.
Utah’s Brad Navin (two) gave Utah a 1-0 lead on the power play with 7:41 left in the first period as Thomas added his first assist and so did Ryan Walters in his 17-18 Utah debut after being acquired in a trade Monday.
The first period saw just 4:39 of five-on-five time as Utah and Allen each drew five power plays.
The Grizzlies return home Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11.
