Dixie State football junior defensive lineman Remington Kelly was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, and eight others were named to the Football Honor Roll, the conference announced Wednesday.
Kelly, who was one of four defensive linemen named to the RMAC All-Academic Team, ranks first among DSU’s defensive linemen with 46 tackles (6.0 for loss), six quarterback hurries and two sacks through nine games this season. Kelly also returned an Adams State fumble 46 yards for a touchdown in Saturday’s 54-28 Homecoming win over the Grizzlies. Additionally, Kelly carries a 3.53 GPA as a business administration major.
Eight other Dixie State football players landed on the RMAC Football Honor Roll, including redshirt sophomore quarterback Blake Barney (3.61, computer information technology), redshirt freshman tight end Hunter Christensen (3.92, business administration), junior wide receiver Brad Duran (3.70, integrated studies), sophomore defensive lineman Beda Galleta (3.68, media studies), junior defensive back Isaiah Jones (3.76, business administration), senior offensive lineman Braden Petersen (3.46, business administration), freshman running back Austin Warhop (3.50, business administration) and redshirt freshman kicker A.J. Yergensen (3.89, business administration).
Adams State’s Chad Hovasse and Colorado Mesa’s Blake Nelson were named RMAC Football Academic Players of the Year, with Hovasse named Academic Offensive Player of the Year and Nelson tabbed as Academic Defensive Player of the Year.
The award winners, along with the First-Team All-Academic members, were voted on by the conference’s sports information directors. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must carry a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and must have been an active student at the institution for at least two-consecutive semesters or three-consecutive quarters. All student-athletes that meet those requirements, but were not voted First Team, automatically qualify for the Honor Roll.
Dixie State plays host to No. 24 Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday at 1 p.m., in the 2017 home finale. The game will serve as the team's Senior Day, as well as Military Appreciation Day.
