The Utah Valley University women's golf team is tied for seventh place with a 16-over-par 304 after the opening round of action on Sunday at the tightly contested Little Rock Women's Golf Classic at the Diamante Country Club.
Ana Raga led Utah Valley on day one of the competition with a 2-over-par 74, which places her in a tie for 13th in the individual standings. Raga sunk two birdies in the opening round and found par on 12 of 18 holes.
"Diamonte is a great course, and Hot Springs Village is a wonderful place to golf. Our team rallied on the last few holes, carding at least four birdies," said UVU head coach Dr. Sue Nyhus. "We are only five or six shots from the lead, so tomorrow is going to be a great day."
Just one stroke behind Raga is Carly Dehlin, who recorded a 3-over-par 75 to land her in a tie for 16th. Dehlin carded one birdie on the day to go along with carding par 14 times. Fellow Wolverine Justine Lauer shot a 77 through the first 18 holes, placing her in a tie for 29th at 5-over par.
Kaylee Shimizu is next for the Wolverines as she sits in a tie for 42nd after shooting a 6-over-par 78 on the day, while Bailey Henley rounded things out for Utah Valley with a 13-over-par 85, which has her currently tied for 74th heading into day two of the three-day tournament. Shimizu led UVU with four birdies on the day.
Sam Houston State leads the team standings after recording a 10-over-par 298. Jenna Phillips of SHSU is the individual leader after the first day of competition with a 2-under-par 70. Jacksonville State and Missouri State are tied for second (301), Central Arkansas is in fourth (302), Houston Baptist and UTEP are tied for fifth (303) and the Wolverines are tied for seventh with UT Arlington (304).
