PROVO — Former BYU golfer Lea Garner took the first-round lead at the inaugural Utah Women’s Open by shooting a 5-under-par 67 at East Bay Golf Course Saturday.

Garner had six birdies on the day, including the final three holes, which gave her a one-stroke edge over South Jordan’s Sirene Blair, who recently completed her collegiate career at San Diego State, and BYU sophomore Anna Kennedy, who both shot 68.

The tournament includes both pros and amateurs and is sponsored by Siegfried & Jensen, who are also the sponsors of this week’s Utah Open tournament at Riverside Country Club. Eleven of the 38 golfers in the field are professionals, including both Garner and Blair.

Kelsey Chugg, who recently won the Utah Women’s Amateur for the fourth time, BYU freshman-to-be Naomi Soifua and Juli Erekson, a pro out of Eagle Mountain, each came in at 69.

The leading groups will tee off at 9:50 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday. — Mike Sorensen
