Our goal is always to advance as many as we can, but on the first day it's big for morale. —Timpview coach Rob Sperry

SALT LAKE CITY — The 2017 4A boys tennis state tournament kicked off Friday with an exciting day full of good matches, and a few shocking moments.

Not shocking, however, is the fact that Timpview stands in first place after day one. The T-birds advanced four of five positions to Saturday’s semifinals, a strong position to be in for any team. However, sitting right on Timpview’s heels is perennial power Skyline.

“Our goal is always to advance as many as we can, but on the first day it's big for morale,” Timpview coach Rob Sperry said when asked about the impact of advancing most of his team.

In first singles Timpview sophomore Josh Pearce advanced to the semifinals with no trouble at all, dismantling both his opponents in straight sets on his way to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Pearce will meet Bonneville sophomore Caden Heaton who also swept his way to the finals.

On the other side of the bracket is an exciting matchup between Woods Cross junior Jakob Kempema and Skyline freshman Connor Robb-Wilcox will take place to decide the other finalist.

Second singles features another favored T-bird, senior Scott Wynn. Wynn breezed to the semifinals with big wins in straight sets over both opponents. His semifinal opponent Maple Mountain senior Brigham Perry won a thrilling match against Woods Cross sophomore Holden Iverson in three sets to advance. The other side of the bracket features Ryan Boddington, the junior from Skyline who breezed through his first two opponents on his way to the semis.

The third singles bracket is the only bracket that will not feature a semifinalist from Timpview. Instead, Skyline senior Dawson Robb-Wilcox appears the favorite after breezing through his first two matches. Robb-Wilcox will meet Spanish Fork senior Sam Slye in the semifinals. Slye ousted Timpview senior Brian Gregory in straight sets to advance to the semifinals.

In first doubles, Timpview’s senior pair of Travis Wardrop and Skyler Johnson appears poised to claim the title in a highly competitive bracket.

“His (Wardrop) leadership is very take charge, very aggressive,” Sperry said.

Second singles also features a very strong Timpview pair in senior Jordan Sagers and junior Jorun Christianson. The pair blew past the competition in the first two matches emerging unscathed on their way to the semifinals. The pair will face a tough test in the semis against Payson’s duo of junior Tayt Kearl and freshman Jake Montgomery.

“I think as a team we feel confident but not over confident,” Sperry said when asked about his team’s mindset going into finals.
