Provo singer 14-year-old Aaliyah Rose is headed to the battle rounds on season 12 of “The Voice.”
Aaliyah joined team Gwen during the blind auditions after Gwen Stefani turned her chair as Aaliyah sang Andra Day’s “Rise Up.”
“You’re so talented and gifted,” Stefani said. “Just the fact that you have a voice like that and a power like that and you have so much style.”
Stefani had said earlier in the show that she was looking for “that young girl that I can connect to and share what I’ve done with.”
Aaliyah said during the show that she has been singing since she was little. When she was 10, her parents started a YouTube channel for her to share her gift of music. One of her most popular songs is Meghan Trainor’s “Lips are Movin” and host Carson Daly shared a good luck message from Trainor before Aaliyah’s audition
Aaliyah told Stefani that she did a ‘50s-style video to Stefani’s “Make Me Like You.”
Aaliyah also told coach Alicia Keys that “No One” was the first song she learned and “If I Ain’t Got You” was the first one Aaliyah performed.
“You are, like, so incredible,” Keys said. “Your voice is beautiful.”
“The Voice” has several rounds of competition. During the blind auditions the four coaches, who this season include Stefani, Keys, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, sit with their backs to the performers and can turn at any time during the 90-second audition. After the coaches build their teams through the blind auditions, they pair their singers to compete against each other in the battle rounds. The coaches choose who will move to the next round and the other coaches can add the remaining artist to his or her team.
“I feel super blessed right now,” said Stefani, who gave hats with #TeamGwen on them to those on her team. “I’m so excited to work with you. We’re going to have so much fun.”
