East Midvale Elementary School crossing guard Barbara Johnson receives flowers from children as they cross the street in Midvale on Wednesday. Johnson, who has been a crossing guard for 38 years, was honored by the Canyons School District and the Utah Department of Transportation for her years of service helping students cross the street safely. Johnson, 76, says she’s hardly missed a day, even in torrential rainstorms and hard-driving blizzards. She’s been such a fixture in the neighborhood — she also lives across the street from the school — that children often come to her door in the summer to request help walking across the street. And after 38 years, she has no immediate plans to hang up the crossing-guard vest. “I’ll do it as long as I can do it,” she said, “and I think I will know when I can’t.”
