"THE PERILOUS JOURNEY OF THE NOT-SO-INNOCUOUS GIRL," by Leigh Statham, Month9Books, $14.99, 298 pages (f) (ages 12 and up)
Lady Marguerite Vadnay grew up spoiled and beloved by her wealthy father in 17th-century France. To tame Marguerite’s unruly behavior, her father hires a demanding and abusive governess. Marguerite hopes to be rid of the governess when she turns 16, but she instead finds out that she must make a choice between marrying someone she loathes or going to boarding school. After saying goodbye to her only true friend and the man she loves, Claude, Marguerite can no longer stand the confines of her life and has had enough. She forsakes her wealth and runs to the new world in search of Claude and freedom.
On her way, Marguerite runs into the annoying and attractive Captain Jacques Laviolette. Throughout the book, Jacques challenges Marguerite and excites strong emotion from her at every chance meeting.
In addition to Jacques, on board the airship headed for the new world, Marguerite has a childhood friend in dire need and an automaton that Claude built for her. While en route, Marguerite is forced to mingle with commoners, deal with the advances of Jacques and find a way to survive a pirate attack. With the help of the automaton, Marguerite is able to endure the challenges, show how dangerous she can be and become a woman ready for life in a new frontier.
"The Perilous Journey of the Not-So-Innocuous Girl" is an adventure-filled romance with robot crickets, interesting characters and tragedy.
There is no foul language, though there is a scene where Marguerite is asked about her non-existent intimate life. The book also mentions domestic violence.
