HOW TO SURPRISE A DAD,” by Jean Reagan, illustrated by Lee Wildish, Alfred A. Knopf Books, $16.99 (ages 3-5)

Salt Lake author Jean Reagan delights again with her new picture book, “How to Surprise a Dad.”

With the light-hearted and playful tone of Reagan's previous books, “How to Babysit a Grandpa” and “How to Babysit a Grandma,” this next one takes aim at fathers.

There are all sorts of suggestions of how to surprise Dad, including things to make, such as paper hearts. Then there are things to do, such as helping him reorganize his shoes and hats. And there are surprises to find — be sure to “Look up, down, under and all around” for them.

That is just the beginning of surprising Dad. There are special days to plan, complete with food, treasure maps and presents. And, of course, there are instructions on how to look innocent or create a distraction if he gets suspicious.

English illustrator Lee Wildish’s drawings of two siblings and their example gives “How to Surprise a Dad” a charming touch.

This handbook for children on surprising Dad is a fun addition and may provide a bit of whimsical help for children looking to surprise a dad in more ways than one.

Reagan’s “How to Babysit a Grandma” is one of five finalists for the Children’s Choice Award for Book of the Year in the K-2nd grade category. Online voting is open at ccbookawards.com until May 3.
