SALT LAKE CITY — A bill that would exempt nursing mothers from jury duty passed through the Utah House of Representatives on Monday.

HB154, sponsored by Rep. Mike McKell, R-Spanish Fork, advanced through the House floor with a 74-0 vote.

McKell said the bill would remedy a situation he hadn’t known existed until after a constituent wrote him a letter saying that she was not excused from jury service, even though she was breast-feeding her child.

The bill now moves on to the Senate for consideration.
