Salt Lake City Firefighters respond Friday, July 18, 2014, to a three alarm fire along the railroad tracks near I-80 and Redwood Road in Salt Lake City.

SALT LAKE CITY — Investigators say sparks from an eastbound train sparked a grass fire near Redwood Road Friday afternoon.

The fire burned nearly 4 acres in one spot and less than 1 acre nearby along the railroad tracks at 300 South and Redwood Road about 3:30 p.m.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department extinguished the fire by about 5 p.m. and crews were focusing on dousing hot spots.

The Utah Department of Transportation closed I-80 off-ramps at Redwood Road and stopped southbound traffic on Redwood Road between South Temple and 500 South. Lanes began to reopen shortly before 6 p.m.
