UVU sophomore Danny Beddes gets set to throw a pitch. He was named the WAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday after his shutout of league leader Sacramento State.

Utah Valley University sophomore right-hander Danny Beddes was named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. Grand Canyon second baseman Chad De La Guerra was named WAC Hitter of the Week.

Beddes recorded his first career complete game 9.0 inning shutout in a 6-0 win at Sacramento State on Sunday. The performance by Beddes marks the first shutout for Utah Valley since May 12, 2012, when Preston Olson set a school record with 16 strikeouts against New York Tech.

Beddes allowed just four singles and kept league leader Sacramento State without a hit over the final five innings of the game. He gave up only two hits in the first inning and just two infield singles the rest of the way. Beddes is the second UVU pitcher to receive the honor. Ryan Evans was named WAC Pitcher of the Week on March 31.

De La Guerra hit .571 (12-for-21) to lead Grand Canyon to a 3-2 record last week. He scored eight runs, including a career-best four runs in GCU’s 12-5 win over at Northern Colorado on Saturday. He was just a single short of the cycle in that game, getting a triple, home run and a double in that order.

Utah Valley hosts Utah on Tuesday before resuming WAC play with a three-game series against Northern Colorado beginning Friday.
