Utah State Aggies head coach Matt Wells talk with Utah State Aggies tight end Keegan Andersen (22) against Weber St. during NCAA football in Logan Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.

Matt Wells has been extended as Utah State’s football head coach through the 2018 season, university officials announced Thursday.

"I'm very appreciative of the support shown by (USU) president Stan Albrecht and (athletic director) Scott Barnes in our staff and myself," Wells said in a statement. "We are motivated daily to continue the culture that has been set here at Utah State in the football program, and we will continue to strive toward our goals of graduating our student-athletes on time, and competing for and winning Mountain West Championships."

In addition to the extension, the university announced Wells and his assistants will also receive raises. Wells could receive more than $800,000 annually with incentives.

Wells took over as the Aggie head coach after Gary Andersen left for Wisconsin after the 2012 season. Wells led USU to a 9-5 record and a win in the Poinsettia Bowl in his first season with the Aggies.

USU opens the 2014 season Aug. 31 at Tennessee.
