Brandon Mull signs 800 copies of the fourth book in his Fablehaven series, "Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary," in March 2009 in Salt Lake City.

Native Utah author Brandon Mull has made quite a name for himself, and he doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

His next book, "Sky Raiders" (Aladdin, $16.99, ages 8-11), is due out March 11, and it may be one of his best novels so far.

The book follows the adventures of Cole, a sixth-grader who takes a trip trick-or-treating around his neighborhood with his friends for Halloween. They all go into a haunted house together, then suddenly his friends get taken through a mysterious passage.

Cole follows and soon finds out they have been taken to a place called the Outskirts. The first book, “Sky Raiders,” tells of his adventures in the first kingdom of the Outskirts as part of the greater Five Kingdoms five-book series.

"There are five kingdoms in one big world, and we are going to get each kingdom with a different magic that works there," Mull said in an interview.

While in one world a sword might be the most valuable weapon to have in a fight, Mull said, another world might render that sword totally useless.

"I hope for readers that will keep that element of discovery," Mull said.

"Sky Raiders" has that sense of adventure Mull can be counted on to create in the eyes of an elementary school child. The novel is easy to follow as Mull's writing is continually improving with each book he publishes. He uses elements from his past writing experiences to contribute to his current writing style.

"I wanted to go to a world where there was a lot to discover, but still light and fun with a feel of Fablehaven and the discovery of the Beyonders," Mull said.

While the Beyonders series hinted at a darker and more somber theme and Fablehaven stayed very lightheated and humorous, "Sky Raiders" meets both of those needs for the reader in a perfectly blended mix.

"I'm always looking for a better story to tell and a better way to tell it," Mull said.

Mull will to continue to write in the juvenile fiction genre, in which a 10-year-old can read a book and love it and his or her parents could also appreciate it.

He said a sequel series to Fablehaven may happen in the future, but at the moment that is just another one of the many great ideas he has. For now, he is focusing on his upcoming tour for his new book and planning for the release of the rest of the series.

Mull said in this series, readers can anticipate one of the most unique worlds Mull has ever created.

"There are some great twists and turns that are coming in book two and three," Mull said. "I promise."

The Five Kingdoms will follow a slightly different release plan from his past series. Instead of one book per year, the first three books will be released one every six months, and the last two will come a year apart.

"Sky Raiders" does not contain any profane language or inappropriate scenes.
