The No. 3 Westminster College women’s basketball team secured a sixth straight Frontier Conference regular season championship with a 62-41 win over No. 19 Montana State-Northern on Saturday night in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster improves to 20-2 overall this season with a 13th consecutive victory. The Griffins move to a perfect 14-0 in Frontier Conference play to secure the sixth regular season title in school history. This is also the team’s eighth consecutive 20-win season for the Griffins.

The Griffins took control of the game early with an 18-3 run just over 14 minutes into the game. During the run, Montana State-Northern (18-8, 8-6 Frontier) missed all 10 of its shot attempts and committed six turnovers. Alli Blake led the Griffins during the sport with eight points.

The second half would see the Griffins push the lead to 27 by outscoring the Skylights 15-6 in the first 10 minutes of the half. Shelby Ellsworth led the way during the span with eight points, including a pair of threes, and the defense limited Northern to 2-of-11 shooting.

Ellsworth led the way for the Griffins with 16 points on a 5-for-7 shooting night. She was perfect on three attempts from beyond the arc and also grabbed four rebounds with two blocks and two steals. Blake added 12 points, four assists and three steals.

Westminster shot 50 percent from the field in the game and connected on 53.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Griffins held Northern to 30.6 percent and forced it into 13 turnovers. The Griffins came up with seven steals and a season-high four blocked shots.

A’Jha Edwards led the Skylights with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kassie Barta used three treys to finish with nine points.

Westminster will now close the regular season with a pair of road games with the first at Lewis-Clark State on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. MST.
