PROVO — The primary mission of the Wrestling Against Cancer Duals was to raise money for Bryce Thompson and his family as Thompson battles leukemia. Thompson, who was unable to attend the event, will receive $1,000 of the funds raised at the event.
Thompson is the younger brother of the late Ric Thompson, who along with his wife, Angie, were the inspiration for the Wrestling Against Cancer Duals started by Provo associate head coach Brian Preece four years ago. Ric Thompson died of brain cancer in 2010 just before the inaugural event.
The 2013 verson brought together 12 teams battling in six duals. When the dust settled, Layton, Davis, Timpanogos, Maple Mountain and host Provo left the venue team winners.
In perhaps the marquee matchup of the night, Layton defeated Mountain View 40-20. Layton placed third in 5A last year, while Mountain View finished fourth. But the Lancers outmuscled the Bruins.
Mountain View jumped out to a 6-0 lead, thanks to a forfeit victory by Brigham Miyazarra at 106 pounds. But Layton quickly got on the scoreboard when Braxton Ocana secured a major decision over Julio Ortiz, 11-3, at 113 pounds.
Mountain View responded when Gavin Cavalli (120 pounds) held on to defeat Jake Brown, 3-2. But then Layton took over the meet.
Defending state champion Andrew Astle secured a major decision victory at 126 pounds to trim the Mountain View lead to 9-8. This was followed by six more Lancer wins as Landon Memmott (132), Sam Stout (138), Oscar Rodriguez (145), Gary Diaz (152), Colton Marshall (160) and Davis Marriott (170) all secured victories. This gave the Lancers a commanding 34-9 lead.
Marshall defeated Mountain View's Scott Stokes by major decision, 13-5, in a battle between two returning state placers. Marshall placed second in 5A at 152 pounds while Stokes placed fifth in 4A in the same weight as both wrestlers have moved up a weight class for this meeting.
Mountain View finally picked up a win when Josh Roberts won by technical fall to cut the Layton lead to 34-14. Layton responded by picking up one last win at 195 pounds when Julius Rabbi won by pin to push Layton out in front, 40-14.
The most exciting match of the dual again paired up two returning state placers at 220 pounds. Layton's Landon Brown placed second last year while Micah Gill was fourth for the Bruins. This time, Mountain View prevailed as Gill survived to win, 7-5. It didn't come without some controversy as Brown's last-second takedown attempt to tie the match and send it overtime was ruled out-of-bounds.
Mountain View also picked up a win when Micah Ngatuvai won by 3-2 decision over Trevor Pappas.
Provo defeated Murray, 40-28. The teams split 12 matches wrestled, but the Spartans couldn't overcome two forfeits at 106 and 113 pounds. The best match of the dual was when Provo's Brandon Evans defeated Murray's Cody Benally 3-0 in a match at 138 pounds. Provo also got pins by Tanden Peterson (126), Rett Cook (182) and Donavan Minutes (195).
In the closest dual meet of the night, Davis came from behind to defeat Westlake, 35-29. The Darts trailed 29-26 going into the final two bouts, but Davis' Connor Taylor defeated Westlake's James Lewis by decision to tie the match at 29-29. Then Maurice Cannon delivered the Dart victory with a first-round pin in the meet's last match at 285 pounds. Wyatt Knowlton (138) got a big pin to help the Davis cause.
Lone Peak took advantage of four West forfeits to defeat the Panthers 49-27. Cole Cowan (132), Cole Johnson (160) and Mitch Stapley (195) also secured pins for the Knights.
Timpanogos trampled Timpview, 66-18. The Thunderbirds had several wrestlers who were missing in action because of Timpview's state championship run in football. The Timberwolves got wins and plenty of pins by Andrew Kerby (120), Jeff Eiden (126), Austin Harris (132), Wade Beverage (138), Brad Simmons (145), Tanyon Jorgensen (152), Jose Linares (160), Christian Silva (220), Pauel Bermudez (285) and brothers Ben (170) and Austin Smith (182).
Two-time defending state champion Maple Mountain looked sharp crushing Herriman, 54-15. The Golden Eagles won the first 10 bouts before the Mustangs cracked the scoreboard.
The dual didn't come without a stunning momemt as Maple Mountain freshman Ryan Hansen upset two-time defending state champion Chandler Strand 13-5 at 120 pounds.
Hansen got plenty of support as Jaron Myrup (106), Tanner Cox (113), Taylor LaMont (132), Zack Harris (138) and Korbon Tibballs (220) won by pin. Cameron Killian (138) and Johnny O'Hearon (152) won by technical fall.
Herriman picked up two wins by pin via brothers Kenner (170) and Shane French (182). At 285 pounds, Herriman's Connor Birch held off Golden Eagle grappler Jacob Biesenger 3-2 in the most competitive bout in the dual.
