VAUDREUIL-DORION, Quebec - Utah Valley University men's golfer Corey Eccles claimed his first career victory on the amateur circuit over the weekend, winning the Men's Provincial Match Play Championship at the Summerlea Golf and Country Club in his native Quebec.

Eccles survived a field of 32 golfers on his way to the title, defeating Mathieu Perron by a score of 3 and 2 in the tournament's final match. Perron was coming off a fourth-place finish at the Canadian University/College Championship just two weeks prior.

The tournament's 23rd seed, Eccles advanced to the second round by default when his first-round opponent withdrew from competition. The Ile Bizard native rolled from there, however, topping seventh-seeded Hughes Legault and Dominic Kanemy - both members of the host club - to reach the semifinals. There, he prevailed in a tight, 19-hole contest with third-seeded Raoul Menard to reach the final.

Competing as a true freshman for UVU last season, Eccles compiled the second-best scoring average on the squad at 74.79, just a little over two stokes behind team-leader Mason Casper. He played in 10 tournaments for the Wolverines, finishing a season-best 15th at the BSU Dash Thomas Memorial in September.
