SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men’s golf team holds a five stroke lead after the first two rounds of the Westminster Invitational that was held at Wingpointe Golf Course on Monday. The Westminster women sit in third after the day’s two rounds.
Westminster’s men shot 294 during the first round that was delayed by an hour and a half due to weather. That put them four strokes off the lead of 290 set by Carroll (Mont.). The Griffins shot a school-record 278 in the second round to open up a five shot advantage heading into Tuesday’s final round.
There are three Griffins inside the top five of the individual standings after two rounds. Dane Jensen shot 71-68 in the two rounds to finish at 139 and hold a three shot lead. Matt Bushman is in third position after going 75-68 for a total of 143. Robert McKee is in a tie for fifth after finishing at 145 by shooting 75-70.
The Westminster women are in third place through two rounds after postings rounds of 342 and 331. The 673 strokes by the Griffins puts them 57 shots off the lead of 616 set by Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). Rocky Mountain is in third after posting a 639 on the first day.
Jenteal Jackson used a second-round 73 to finish in second place with a total of 154. She is eight strokes behind the 146 shot by Heather Bruce of Lewis-Clark State after an opening round 69. Mari Hutsi from Westminster is in ninth at 162 with Brandi Bork tied for 10th with a score of 164.Comment on this story
The final regular season tournament of the Frontier Conference season comes down to Tuesday’s final round. The Griffin men are seven strokes behind Lewis-Clark State in the season standings entering Tuesday. The Griffin women are in third with one round left but sit 99 shots off the pace set by LCSC.
Jensen enters the final round with a 13-stroke lead in the season race as he looks for a second straight Frontier Conference title. Jackson is trying for a third consecutive Frontier title and is eight shots behind Bruce entering Tuesday.
Tuesday’s final round at Wingpointe Golf Course will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
