In the first of its Western Athletic Conference meets of the 2013 season, Utah State gymnastics will face Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, on Friday at 7 p.m.

Last week, the Thunderbirds were a part of the USU-hosted tri-meet with Hamline University. SUU finished first with 194.075, with USU in second place with 192.875 and Hamline wrapping it up with 181.975.

As both WAC and in-state rivals, Utah State and Southern Utah have a long history of competition. The teams have been consistently comparable, with a nearly even record. The Thunderbirds currently edge out the Aggies, leading 38-36.

Both USU and SUU head coaches began their coaching careers as student assistants for Utah State legendary head coach Ray Corn, with the Aggies' coach Jeff Richards coaching from 1988-90 while Thunderbirds coach Scott Bauman was with the Aggies through his 1990 graduation. Richards was later an assistant under Bauman at SUU from 1991-98.
