"ASHTOWN BURIALS No. 2: The Drowned Vault," by N.D. Wilson, Random House Children's Books, $16.99, 447 pages (f) (ages 9-12)

"The Drowned Vault" is the second book author N.D. Wilson's five-part series, Ashtown Burials, after "The Dragon's Tooth."

This action-packed novel is easy for any fantasy-fiction lover to get lost in.

Cyrus and Antigone Smith have got a lot of trouble on their hands since they lost the Dragon's Tooth to the evil Dr. Phoenix. Because the tooth is the only thing that can kill a transmortal, Dr. Phoneix, now that he has possession of the tooth, is seeking out transmortals and killing them one by one.

Not only are there evil men for the brother and sister team to deal with, but those who are supposed to be on their side are angry with them for the deaths of their friends. It's a real predicament when both the bad guys and the alleged good guys don't care if you live.

With few friends on their side, Cyrus and Antigone are on the run, searching for Dr. Phoenix with hopes of regaining possession of the tooth. But of course, life and death tasks are never easy. The Smith siblings run into more hardships and discover greater evils.

Wilson introduces new and interesting characters and resolves questions about the Smiths' background that were left hanging from the first book.

Although the book is written for a young adult audience, readers of all ages can enjoy this book for its clever writing.

Comment on this story

Fantasy-fiction lovers looking for magical worlds can immerse themselves in characters that who become friends, bad guys who can be loved because they are hated and the possibilities of imagination. Thank goodness there are authors like N.D. Wilson.

Readers should be sure to read the first book before starting "The Drowned Vault," as there is little review of "The Dragon's Tooth" to guide them along.
