KAYSVILLE — A 47-year-old man died from gunshot wounds following a shooting at an apartment complex that left another man in critical condition Friday afternoon, police said.

Just before 2:30 p.m., police say a man shot a 51-year-old maintenance worker several times, critically wounding him, in a common area of the Francis Peak Apartments, 600 W. Mutton Hollow Road.

Police say an armed witness then shot at the gunman, but it is unknown whether those gunshots were fatal.

The gunman fled to a nearby apartment and barricaded himself inside. After attempting to negotiate, a SWAT robot broke the door down and the team entered the apartment. They found the man dead.

The man's identity has not been released.

The maintenance worker was airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition.

Creekside Elementary School, 275 W. Mutton Hollow Road, was locked down during the ordeal. School was let out earlier in the day, but some teachers and a few students were in the school at the time, police said.
