OREM — The search continued Wednesday for a man who police say raped a woman in a movie theater parking lot after she offered to help him with his apparent car trouble.
At 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, a 22-year-old woman had just finished watching a movie at the Cinemark University Mall, 1010 S. 800 East, and was walking to her car when she noticed a man with a flashlight near a truck who appeared to be having problems with his vehicle, said Orem Police Sgt. Craig Martinez. The hood of the vehicle was up and the man appeared to be looking at it with a flashlight.
The woman asked if she could help and the man said, "Yes" and told her to hold the flashlight, Martinez said. But as soon as he handed it to her, the woman told police he slammed her head against the truck and raped her.
The assault allegedly happened on the west side of the parking lot. The attacker was described as a white man, about 30 years old, 6 feet tall with a medium build and blond hair and a mustache. He was last seen wearing a black shirt with an orange and yellow design, tight Wrangler jeans and black cowboy boots. The man was driving a full-size dark blue or dark green Dodge or Ford truck.
After the attack was over, the woman drove home but waited 24 hours before calling police, Martinez said. It was not immediately known why the woman waited before contacting authorities.
The woman had gone to the movie theater with a friend, but that friend got sick during the show and left early, Martinez said.
The movie theater was "pretty full" that night, the sergeant said. If there were any witnesses, they are asked to call police at 801-229-7070.
