Utah State head women’s basketball coach Jerry Finkbeiner announced Monday Tanja Steed and Mariah Miles will round out the additions to the Aggie roster.
Steed, a 6-foot-7 center, hails from Melbourne, Australia and comes to Utah State from Carl Albert Junior College in Poteau, Okla. She will be a junior next season for the Aggies. Despite fighting a shoulder injury, she played in 23 games for the Vikings last season. During her freshman year at Carl Albert, she played 17 games for the Vikings. Steed first got a taste of life in the United States, spending a year at Forsyth Country Day School in Louisville, N.C. She represented Queensland at the U16/18 level at the National Championships. Steed was also invited to the Australian National Training Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Miles, is a 5-foot-7 guard from Geary, Okla., and played for Finkbeiner her freshman season at Oral Roberts. She is one of two transfers from ORU, including Cristal Turner. As a freshman, she played in 12 games for the Golden Eagles, including seeing time in Oral Roberts WNIT game against Wichita State. At Calumet High School, Miles led the team to 107 wins in four seasons and a Class A State title in 2011, earning MVP honors. As a senior in high school, she averaged 13.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Miles will have to sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules and will join USU as a sophomore for the 2013-14 year.
Utah State has now signed eight players for the 2012-13 season. Haylee Thompson, a forward from Hailey, Idaho, and Makenlee Williams, a forward/guard, from Syracuse, Utah, will be freshmen. The Aggies also added Stephanie Bairstow, a forward from Brisbane, Australia and junior transfers Kelsey Corcoran and Jasmine Porter.
