ELK RIDGE, Sanpete County — The Sanpete Sheriff's Office tweeted Sunday that it believes to have identified the person who died in the Wood Hollow Fire but it is not yet releasing the person's name.

"ME (medical examiner) states DNA is being used to concretely ID the victim. This will take some time," a tweet from the sheriff's office said.

The body of a man was found near a burned home in Elk Ridge by search and rescue crews documenting the burned structures Tuesday, June 26. Sanpete County Sheriff Brian Nielsen said at that time tentative identification had been made and family members had been notified.

On July 4, a Sanpete Messenger newspaper report named the victim relying on reports from long-time friend David Joseph. The information is not attributed to law enforcement officials.

Joseph told the newspaper that the victim was staying on the Elk Ridge lot he owns and apparently was in his car attempting to escape the fire when he was overcome.
