SALT LAKE CITY — Charges have been filed against a Salt Lake City woman who allegedly took her 9-month-old and 2-year-old children with her on a drive-by shooting early Sunday morning.
Vera Marie Castillo, 33, is charged with eight counts of third-degree felony discharge of a firearm — including five in the presence of a child — and two counts of child abuse, class A misdemeanors.
Police say Castillo fired shots from inside a white Ford Explorer at a man being dropped off at her neighbor's house. The man ran away, and Castillo drove after him, according to charges filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court.
Moments later, Castillo returned to the house and fired a pistol several more times at the house, charges state.
Castillo then drove to the police station, where she was taken into custody. Police found a 2-year-old child in the back seat of the SUV, along with a bag containing several rounds of ammunition. The 9-month-old was in the front seat, where police also recovered a handgun, according to charging documents.
Police said the car was "covered in filth and smelled strongly of feces and body odor," the charges state. Bugs were crawling over bedding that had been laid out in the car, according to the charges.
Castillo is being held in Salt Lake County Jail on $500,000 bail.
