SALT LAKE CITY — A woman who police say took her 9-month-old and 2-year-old with her to commit a drive-by shooting has been arrested.

Just after midnight Sunday, someone from inside a vehicle near 1750 W. 400 North fired at several people standing in a driveway, forcing them to scatter, said Salt Lake police detective Mike Hamideh. No one was injured.

A few minutes later, however, the same vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fired a second time. Again, no one was injured, he said.

The alleged driver of the vehicle, Vera Castillo, 42, then sent a text message to her oldest daughter threatening to kill herself and her two young children, Hamideh said. A short time later, however, she showed up at the Salt Lake Police Department on her own and turned herself in.

"She had no explanation for her actions," Hamideh said. "It was pure luck no one was hurt."

Castillo was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of multiple counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Hamideh said the people Castillo fired at were her neighbors, but they have not had any prior dealings with her.
