SYRACUSE — The city will be implementing a $10 late fee on all utility accounts that are past due.
As the utility bill is due by the 25th of each month, residents will receive a 10-day grace period to allow for payment. The late fee will not be added until the 5th of the following month. Fees began Feb. 5 on all accounts past due at that time.
The city, citing an effort to improve efficiencies in its utility department, said the late fee will help to reduce the amount of past due accounts, thus reducing time and money spent on collection of these accounts.
The city said in a press release that the most secure, cost-effective way for both residents and the city of Syracuse is to sign up for the electronic funds transfer. This option is provided at no cost to the resident or the city. All that is needed to participate is the transfer form and a voided check. Forms can be obtained on the city website or at the city offices.
Bills can also be paid by cash, check or money order, and Syracuse accepts Visa or Mastercard, which can be paid online at www.syracuseut.com or over the phone at 801-825-1477. A drop box can be found in front of the city office next to the blue mail boxes.
